My English History
My English classes began during 5th grade. I came over from France at the age of nine, not knowing any English. Arriving to a State College middle school in which I was expected to speak and understand English was, therefore, a problem. I took ESL classes for six months, and then followed the same classes everyone else took all through middle school. The one difference being the Speech class I took last year, which was a mix of composition and public speaking, with some focus on learning to write to the intended audience, and trying to introduce our feelings into our styles of writing. Although I am not science oriented, writing has never been my area of expertise, or of interest for that matter. I spent countless hours reading, but the only thing I have ever written for myself (that was not required by some class) was a book that I never finished into which I incorporated a lot of my dreams. For my future careers, or at least, those I wish to enter, I know and understand that i will need to do a lot of writing. I would like to work on making my writing flow more. I find that as I write, ideas just come pouring out without a lot of transitions, which can make reading my writing much harder.

Flow and structure are definitely important and we'll work on that with the first few papers really heavily. Do you feel like your French background still affects your writing at all (random fact: I'm actually taking a French class myself this summer). Regardless, hopefully we can get you more comfortable with writing this semester.
ReplyDeleteI don't think my French affects me at all, since I had a really good teacher. Actually, nowadays its the other way around... I have to ask my parents for advice when i try to write in French.
ReplyDeleteOk cool. Just wanted to check and make sure.
ReplyDeleteF.Y.I I keep a dream journal in which I record all of my dreams ;) I think it's really cool that you utilize your dreams as well!
